Where Confidence Walks

There are a million, trillion different courses out there about how, by taking said course, you can become instant-confident. A bit like instant coffee. With the caffeine high too. The thing is, there is no such thing, like every trillion, billion other thing in the world, as an easy fix. Confidence is especially elusive. Confidence …

The Point of You

ARTHUR: Yeah! I love going through the X-ray gate! It’s a bit like a game show, isn’t it? There’s always that moment of ‘Will I make the buzzer go? Will I make the buzzer go?!Yes! I didn’t make the buzzer go!’ Or ‘Ohhh, I made the buzzer go!’ GERRY (laughing happily): All right, then! Well, follow me! DOUGLAS: …

Un-Becoming

As I’ve been going back through my old blog format and refreshing past posts which still speak to my present self, I stumbled on this one. I’ve been trying to find my feet with my writing voice and identity in novel format lately and this reminded me that un-becoming is a life work. It’s not …

Bicycle Adventures

You can tell a culture by the way they ride bicycles. Not on the right or wrong side of the road. That’s irrelevant to this particular case. Rather, the riding is in where they go and how they stop. Especially in how they stop. Remember when you first learned how to cycle? Getting started wasn’t …

Be a Cloud: Isle of Skye

Above the sky, clouds streak, they bob and pass along in a mild manner more befitting a dodgy old man with  walking stick than amorphous miracles of nature which humans will idly observe into definable form. There a cow. A cat. Now a ship. Stretched into a dragon. A boy reading a book. A griffin …

Bath: A Tub of History

Stylish. Unanimous. Uniform. Sleek. Polished. The famous Royal Crescent. Those words and their synonyms summarise Bath. A city which looks to have been built in one era, when in reality, it is part of as many eras as any city in these parts of the world. So what makes it so special? It’s in the …

Unpacking People’s Perspectives

“A philosopher once asked, “Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human?” Pointless, really…”Do the stars gaze back?” Now that’s a question.” — Neil Gaiman (Stardust) Haven’t done a quote of the week post in a long time so this is me getting back on that …

Time Smells of Toothpaste: A Drabble and A Muse

Time Smells of Toothpaste

Occasionally, time is like toothpaste. It gets used every day. It seems infinite. It is always there. Waiting.

Sometimes it comes out quickly.

Sometimes you have to roll bits and squeeze and squeeze to make it pass through and onto your toothbrush.

That is the epitome of boredom. Frustration. Challenge.

Some people have mastered that skill of toothpaste squeezing. They dance while rolling, sing while edging the paste, up and up.

Then they cheer. They celebrate. And get on with brushing.

Sometimes there seems to be such an abundance of toothpaste. Always there. Waiting.

You forget about the cinnamon flavoured tube you got in your Christmas stocking or that plain one for sensitive teeth, that really, probably, just needed you to remember to floss.

Toothpaste doesn’t last forever. Especially if the top falls off. It dries up. Leaks out. Cakes onto everything a blue or white crust (depending on your chosen flavour).

Use it wisely. One day you’ll reach for the toothpaste and realise it’s all gone.

So you write it on your to-do list.

At least, when you have a moment. You can buy more.

Occasionally, I wish time was like toothpaste.
