Friendship
It sits on the edge of your driveway
A cardboard box covered in felt tip
scribbles.
And duct tape.
Waiting for removal by Wednesday recycling.
Even friendship exists on a social calendar. Made
of institutionalised emotions.
In blue and yellow. Unicorns
who rampage and riddle a forest.
They kicked the box down first.
The purple eating jealousy
that drops pennies for thoughts,
sometimes bloodies knuckles.
Hugs fly by and purple fades to black.
Mostly. Friendship existed as the face
of a castle, a ship, a space base.
Until the 5’o’clock tock
decided otherwise.
Just a day. Of temporary play full
Of transient cardboard. It reads
Please recycle me.
Maybe, if you use the right colours.
I’ll be your friend.
