New Adventures
I moved to a new place recently, in the same city, but now, I am a minute’s walk from the ocean. Emily Carr’s home sits a block away and down on the corner of my street is the edge of an old, Victoria era graveyard. I am surrounded by houses full of high level pianists and get strains of Debussy, Rachmaninoff and Beethoven all at once, most days.
It’s out of a storybook, which makes me less sad that I am settling in place for a while so that I can work on turning my art and writing into more serious pursuits than the side products of travel.
I can still live near beautiful place that rival this stream in the countryside around Galway in Ireland.
As I settle into this new place with a new routine I am switching my usual Tuesday/Thursday posts to Wednesdays for the time being.
But for now, enjoy a little bit of word music, otherwise known as poetry.

Follow the Whisper of Water
The beauty of music lies in the secret story it tells,
unique to every listener, changed by every player:
There the water falls,
deep in the lilac woods
dressed with dawn dew, dropping,
dropping first with the trickling stream.
It stretches, steps, closer,
closer to the edge.
Tumbles. Cascading ritardando
over the face of a figure
standing beneath the waves from above. Whirling,
whirling. Shattering crystals.
Feet and fingers poised, pirouette
and pounce in the reflected arc of sun
It threads through the water
as the figure sinks under the surface
a body slipped between sheets of blue.
Dance with me in the depths.
Dance until twilight creeps over the stream,
down between the strings of water
dropping off rocks
into the pond. Let it lull you to sleep.
Sleep now. You are home.
Have you walked among nature this week? It’s autumn, a time of crisp air and stunning colours here. It’s a time to reflect, to bring in the fruits of summer and to begin storing energy for the winter. Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself to the many pumpkin themes and a long walk outdoors.
